What to track and Why?

Feeding

An infant usually drinks milk every few hours. While irregularity in timing is not alarming, the baby is expected to progressively increase the daily intake.

Pee and Poo

A newborn is expected to pee and poop several times a day. Any irregularity indicates that either the baby is dehydrated or issues with the baby's digestive system.

Sleep

A newborn usually sleeps between 12 to 18 hours a day in multiple short sessions. Sleep plays a critical and positive role in their physical and cognitive growth.

Irregularities in these activities inform the doctors and care givers to take a closer look at the baby’s development. In addition to these it is normal to measure and track the height, weight and the circumference of the baby’s head.

Okay, but why does one need to actively track using an app or journal? Simple. New parents are significantly sleep deprived and stressed, which leads to short term memory loss (“mommy brain”). Passive mental tracking of the above activities is almost impossible. There are several advantages for new parents to actively track the newborn’s activities.

So, what are some of the best ways to keep track of your newborn’s essential activities? There are a plethora of apps to help you. We, as a group of 6 parents, have tried and tested many apps over the last six months and here are our recommendations.
